The FLuD group has ongoing collaborations with industry and international Universities researching cutting edge approaches to computational aero-elasticity using both in-house algorithms and commercial codes.
Fluid-structure interactions within cavities
Fluid-structure interactions within cavities occur when fluid flows over a gap or hole in an object, generating pressure oscillations which cause structural effects ranging from annoying vibrations through to severe structural damage. We have ongoing projects working on novel fluid-structural coupling approaches linking our very high order numerical methods with simple but powerful structural models. These animations illustrate very high order computations of FSI of a rectangular beam in a cavity at Mach 0.8, and a cross-section through a pure aerodynamic computation of the same cavity without the beam.
